research-storyboards

Storyboards are graphic organizers in the form of illustrations or images displayed in sequence for the purpose of pre-visualizing a motion picture, animation, motion graphic or interactive media sequence.

The storyboarding process, in the form it is known today, was developed at the Walt Disney Studio during the early 1930s, after several years of similar processes being in use at Walt Disney and other animation studios. the first complete storyboards were created for the 1933 Disney short Three Little Pigs.

A storyboard provides a visual layout of events as they are to be seen through the camera lens. And in the case of interactive media, it is the layout and sequence in which the user or viewer sees the content or information. In the storyboarding process, most technical details involved in crafting a film or interactive media project can be efficiently described either in picture, or in additional text.
Some live-action film directors, such as Joel and Ethan Coen, use storyboard extensively before taking a pitch to their funders, stating that it helps them to get the support they require, since they can show exactly where the money will be used.

Create a storyboard (storyboarding) has been proven as one of the most effective ways to plan a film and video games. There are many reasons to use a storyboard. Here are just a few of them:
  • Storyboard to save time and money.
  • Storyboard can help to show scenes or sequences that are difficult to explain.
  • Storyboard can help to communicate the concept to all parties involved in the development.
  • Storyboard can help design teams to solve difficult problems.
  • a story board from the sixth sence

Title sequence

This is our title sequence template,it shows our institutional information and visual in the title sequence. We will first shows two seconds of information and two seconds visual.

Half-term Homework Assignment --Min

In our film, we made sure to use tripod every time except for a scene that we held camera with hand not that steady to create tension.  Also, we remade the scene that that actor through pendant into lake, which in the previous one was not framed in the middle. And we tried to make every shot as similar as possible to the previous one. We used quite a lot different types of shots. For example, mid shots are mainly used on the character while some long shots were given to the ‘ghost’ when it is coming closer.
When doing editing, our film appeared to be too long, in order to make it flow together; we decided to cut the first or last bits in every shot. There wasn’t any editing transition in the previous one, so we didn’t add any.
Although it was a girl in our film that played a man’s role, she did a real good job. And we choose the University of Nottingham to do the remake, the surroundings were quite similar. So that we were able to film similarly. Unfortunately , it was a nice sunny afternoon, so it wasn’t so scare. One thing good was that we didn’t need to prepare for the costume but dressed as normal.
It was pity that I didn’t have any chance to use the camera or do the editing. The only thing I did was I wrote some part of the planning and he   report on our blog and scanned the planning.     I think we can add some sound effect and improve the film by using some function in imovie.
When it comes to final coursework, I think I will try to make my group listen to me and make a more detailed plan. We should clarify everyone’s duty and discuss more before filming not during filming.

Foundation Portfolio Research-Elaine

I need to pay more attention in analysis not only describe details

Foundation Portfolio Research-June

It's the research of our horror film(The Grudge),and from the feedback of the teacher there have some good points but lacks of detail and examples from the film. I'll pay more attention next time when I watch the horror film, and put more detail from the film in the note.

3. We should have been more energetic and passionate
4. Make more clear in target audience.
5. We should have concerned about the time.

Strength-
1. We have lots of information in our powerpoint(  eg: photos, video clip)
2. We consider about the location and make up.
3. Lots of research.
4. We talk though the title sequence and hang out our notes.

Research--Age certificate--Min

The BBFC currently issues the following certificates. The category logos were introduced in December 2002, replacing the previous ones that had been in place since 1982.
Universal – Suitable For All

Universal
All ages admitted, there is nothing unsuitable for children over 4.

It is impossible to predict what might upset any particular child. But a ‘U’ film should be suitable for audiences aged four years and over. ‘U’ films should be set within a positive moral framework and should offer reassuring counterbalances to any violence, threat or horror. The standard rules for a film to be ‘U’ are:
· No discriminatory language or behavior unless clearly disapproved of.
· No references to illegal drugs or drug misuse unless they are infrequent and innocent, or there is a clear educational purpose or anti-drug message suitable for young children.
· Scary sequences should be mild, brief and unlikely to cause undue anxiety to young children. The outcome should be reassuring.
· No potentially dangerous behavior which young children are likely to copy. No emphasis on realistic or easily available weapons.
· Infrequent use only of very mild bad language.
· Occasional natural nudity, with no sexual context.
· Mild sexual behavior (for example, kissing) and references only (for example, to ‘making love’).
· While challenging themes may be present, their treatment must be sensitive and appropriate for young children.
Mild violence only. Occasional mild threat or menace only.
All ages admitted, but certain scenes may be unsuitable for children under 8

Parental Guidance - General viewing, but some scenes may be unsuitable for young children

Children of any age are allowed to watch ‘PG’ films without being accompanied by a parent or guardian. A ‘PG’ film should not disturb a child aged around eight or older; however parents are advised to consider whether the content may upset younger or more sensitive children.

· Discriminatory language or behavior is unlikely to be acceptable unless clearly disapproved of or in an educational or historical context. Discrimination by a character with which children can willingly identify is unlikely to be acceptable.

· References to illegal drugs or drug misuse must be harmless or carry a suitable anti-drug message.

· Frightening sequences should not be prolonged or intense. Fantasy settings may be a explanatory factor.

· No detail of potentially dangerous behaviour which young children are likely to copy. No glamorisation of realistic or easily available weapons.

· Mild bad language only.

· Natural nudity, with no sexual context.

· Sexual activity may be implied, but should be discreet and rare. Mild sex references and innuendo only.

· Where more serious issues are featured (for example, domestic violence) nothing in their treatment should overlook unacceptable behaviour.

· Moderate violence, without detail, may be allowed, if justified by its context (for example, history, comedy or fantasy).
Cinema only. Introduced in 2002.
Films under this category are considered to be unsuitable for very young people. Those aged under 12 years are only admitted if accompanied by an adult, aged at least 18 years, at all times during the motion picture. However, it is generally not recommended that children under 12 years should watch the film. Films under this category can contain mature themes, discrimination, soft drugs, commonly used milder swear words, and moderate violence/sex references.

12
Home media only since 2002. 12A-rated films are usually given a 12 certificate for the VHS/DVD version unless extra material has been added that requires a higher rating.
Nobody younger than 12 can rent or buy a 12-rated VHS, DVD, Blu-ray Disc, UMD or game. Films in this category may include infrequent drugs, infrequent use of strong language, brief nudity, discreet sexual activity, and moderate violence.

Suitable for 12 years and over

Exactly the same criteria are used to classify works at ‘12A’ and ‘12’. These categories are awarded where the material is suitable, in general, only for those aged 12 and over. Works classified at these categories may upset children under 12 or contain material which many parents will find unsuitable for them.
The ‘12A’ category exists only for cinema films. No one younger than 12 may see a ‘12A’ film in a cinema unless accompanied by an adult and films classified ‘12A’ are not recommended for a child below 12. An adult may take a younger child if, in their judgement, the film is suitable for that particular child.
· Discriminatory language or behaviour must not be endorsed by the work as a whole. Aggressive discriminatory language or behaviour is unlikely to be acceptable unless clearly condemned.
· Any misuse of drugs must be infrequent and should not be glamorised or give instructional detail.
· Moderate physical and psychological threat may be tolerable, provided disturbing sequences are not frequent or constant.
· Dangerous behaviour (for example, hanging, suicide and self-harming) should not dwell on detail which could be copied, or appear pain or harm free. Easily accessible weapons should not be glamorised.
· Moderate language is allowed. The use of strong language (for example, ‘fuck’) must be rare.
· Nudity is allowed, but in a sexual context must be brief and discreet.
· Sexual activity may be briefly and discreetly portrayed. Sex references should not go beyond what is suitable for young teenagers. Frequent crude references are unlikely to be acceptable.

· Mature themes are acceptable, but their treatment must be suitable for young teenagers.
· Moderate violence is allowed but should not dwell on detail. There should be no emphasis on injuries or blood, but occasional gory moments may be permitted if justified by the context. Sexual violence may only be implied or briefly and discreetly indicated, and must have a strong contextual justification.
Only those over 15 years are admitted.
Nobody younger than 15 can rent or buy a 15-rated VHS, DVD, Blu-ray Disc, UMD or game, or watch a film in the cinema with this rating. Films under this category can contain adult themes, hard drugs, strong language, moderate-strong violence/sex references, and mild non-detailed sex activity.

Suitable only for 15 years and over

No one younger than 15 may see a ‘15’ film in a cinema. No one younger than 15 may rent or buy a ‘15’ rated video work.

· The work as a whole must not support discriminatory language or behaviour.

· Drug taking may be shown but the film as a whole must not promote or encourage drug misuse. The misuse of easily accessible and highly dangerous substances (for example, aerosols or solvents) is unlikely to be acceptable.

· Strong threat and menace are permitted unless aggressive or sexualised.

· Dangerous behaviour (for example, hanging, suicide and self-harming) should not dwell on detail which could be copied. Easily accessible weapons should not be glamorised.

· There may be frequent use of strong language (for example, ‘fuck’). The strongest terms (for example, ‘cunt’) may be acceptable if necessary by the situation. Aggressive or repeated use of the strongest language is unlikely to be acceptable.

· Nudity may be allowed in a sexual context but without strong detail. There are no constraints on nudity in a non-sexual or educational context.

· Sexual activity may be portrayed without strong detail. There may be strong verbal references to sexual behaviour, but the strongest references are unlikely to be acceptable unless necessary by context. Works whose primary purpose is sexual arousal or stimulation are unlikely to be acceptable.

· No theme is prohibited, provided the treatment is appropriate for 15 year olds.

· Violence may be strong but should not dwell on the infliction of pain or injury. The strongest gory images are unlikely to be acceptable. Strong sadistic or sexualised violence is also unlikely to be acceptable. There may be detailed verbal references to sexual violence but any portrayal of sexual violence must be discreet and have a strong relative justification.
This is the rating that we think is suitable to our story because the story fits in with ‘15’ criteria.

Only adults are admitted.
Nobody younger than 18 can rent or buy an 18-rated VHS, DVD, Blu-ray Disc, UMD or game, or watch a film in the cinema with this rating. Films under this category do not have limitation on the bad language that is used. Hard drugs are generally allowed, and strong violence/sex references along with strong sexual activity is also allowed. Scenes of strong real sex may be permitted if justified by the context.

Suitable only for adults

No-one younger than 18 may see an ‘18’ film in a cinema.

No-one younger than 18 may rent or buy an ‘18’ rated video.

The BBFC’s public consultations and The Human Rights Act 1998, at ‘18’ the BBFC’s guideline concerns will not normally override the principle that adults should be free to choose their own entertainment. Exceptions are most likely in the following areas:
where the material is in breach of the criminal law, or has been created through the commission of a criminal offence.
Where material or treatment appears to the BBFC to risk harm to individuals or, through their behaviour, to society – for example, any detailed portrayal of violent or dangerous acts, or of illegal drug use, which may cause harm to public health or morals. This may include portrayals of sexual or sexualised violence which might, for example, eroticise or endorse sexual assault.
Where there are more explicit images of sexual activity which cannot be justified by context. Such images may be appropriate in ‘R18’ works.

Can only be shown at licensed cinemas or sold at licensed retailers or sex shops, and only to adults, those aged 18 or over. Films under this category have material the BBFC does not allow for its "18" rating, thus the violence and sex activity will be stronger in R18-rated VHSs, DVDs and films than those rated "18," however, there is still a range of material that is often cut from the R18 rating. More cuts are demanded in this category than any other category.

Research-- The British Board of Film Classification BBFC --Min

The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC), originally British Board of Film Censors, is a non-governmental organisation, funded by the film industry and responsible for the national classification of films within the United Kingdom. It has a statutory requirement to classify videos, DVDs and some video games under the Video Recordings Act 2010.

All films and video games rated by the BBFC receive a certificate, along with "consumer advice" detailing references to sex, violence and coarse language. If a certificate specifies that a film or video game is only suitable for someone over a certain age, then only those over that age may buy it.
The BBFC can also advise cuts for a less-restrictive rating. This generally occurs in borderline cases where distributors have requested a certificate and the BBFC has rated the work at a more-restrictive level; however, some cuts are compulsory, such as scenes that violate the Protection of Children Act or Cinematograph Films (Animals) Act. The final certificate then depends on the distributor's decision on whether or not to make the suggested cuts. Some works are even rejected if the distributor refuses the cut.

June-Title Sequences Research

This is the title sequence of the movie named The Ring.Although this title sequence are short, but it's very scary. This title sequence created fear by the women which wear white long dress. It was shocked when it focus on her eyes and feet. And because this movie are talking about the women will come out from the TV.Therefore it shows some part of the movie in the TV which i like this idea very much and i will probably use it.It's because i think that it's a good for transfer to other scens and bring audience into the movie. Moreover, when it focus from her hair to her eyes are very scary and a good way to scared people in a very short time.Again,it use white words and black background which can clearly shows the words.

June-Title Sequences Research

This is the title sequence of the movie named Saw.This title sequence created fear in a very suitable way, most of the fear are created by the background sound. The title start by a men scream. And It shows the title about 3 seconds then it shows the picture for 3 seconds. Most of the pictures are showing the time .The clock can bring the audience think what will happen when the time come. What I learned from this clip was how to use the skill in making a title sequence which with a good time control. Moreover it is the same with what i want to make in my own video which is a title then 2 seconds video. In what i like most in this clip was the final sound which is like someone talking this a picture or a document to end the title sequence. Finally, the word shows in the white colour and always pops out by flash light.

Half-term Homeware Assignment-June Leung

Our group re-make the 'Psychological 2' video clip during. In our re-make we have hold the shot very steady. It's because most of the shots me used a tripod to help. Also,we practiced a lot before filming. And to in cases the shots are not enough,we took several times for each scene. After that,we chose the best one to use, therefore the quality of the video can be proof. The video clip we firmed are smooth and the color which we use white balance is correct.Besides,we focus very good this time, especially the one focus on the necklace.from not focus to focus. We control it very well and every shots we did it on a slow and clear way to show the audience, make it very clear. Then,we use different shot types to shot our video clip.Which we did use close up for the actor and the pendant, extreme close up for the actor to show her expression and emotion,a lot of mid close up for the location, actor, pendant and the pond, long shot for the birds and the extreme long shot for the second actor. Also used the 180 C rule and 30 C rule, make the video clip more organized. To talk with the angle,we have only used high and canted angle. It's because high angle make the actor look more vulnerable and in our cases the actor are suppose to be scared and not powerful,so we can't use high angle. And we used canted angle to show the dynamic of the actor. And movement,we used all pan, track and zoom to follow the actor and the objects. Finally,we have notice the head room and the lead room.

Secondly, after filming we edited it.We put all the shots together,we choose the best one and put it in our video clip. It's seem very smooth and make sense. Our transitions look good as well which is very impressive. In the process of editing,we make the video clip darker to make it more scary. Moreover, some of the shots we make the actor move faster, aim to make it more mystery.

We don't have to do make up in our video, the actor just have to dress up appropriate.Although the actor are girl but she dresses very formal and look like a men.Pendant is our only prop,we brought one which is very alike with the original one. Also, the locations was very suitable which is inside the university of Nottingham. There got all we need such as pond, chair, trees and birds. Moreover, there don't have many people around, make the process of filming goes very smooth. We just have to set the tripod to the right place, make sure ti balanced. And make sure our stuff are not in the video. Finally the actor are very impressive. It's because she finished the shots very good in once.We don't jave to NG so many times. Her performance are great especially her expression and emotion,It look very real.

First of all,we planned the idea together in group,we both share ideas and finally got a result we both agree. After Elaine found the location to film,i completed the storyboard. And we went to university of Nottingham to film.I did most of the filming part and some of the edit. However,we don't have enough time to make the background music which is not good enough. In my opinion, the thing we have to improve is the time control. It's because this time the time control is bad, therefore the video are very long and after we cut it,it seem better but still more than 40 seconds,so next time we have to make sure what exact time we have to take.

For the final coursework will be totally different, because of the different storyline. But most of the skill we used should be the same. Also,I would like to make more effect to make it looks more scary. And try to use different skill.

Half-term Homeware Assignment-Elaine Wen

We re-made the psychological film before half term. In our film, we put camera on a tripod during our shooting except for we wanted to make an terrible ambience, when we shot the part from the back of the tree we held camera in hand and use shaking of camera to create sense.
Because it is a remake film so we tried our best to make sure our film looks similar to the original one, so we did try our best to frame the shots as similar as they did. And we used lots of different type of shot e.g. extreme long shot to show the strange people and mid shot for the main scene. Also we use canted angle to build sense .At the end of our film we used extreme close up and focus to show the pendant which came back from water. That is my favourite part. We do used some composition techniques
Our film really follow the rule of continuity, they link up with each other really well, because when we shot the film we had been really careful with the angle we moved and we remembered the degrees rules .We cut unwanted parts of our shots and then put them together and then we adjusted the light level of our shots and adjusted speed of some of them.
We shot our film in the University of Nottingham; we chose the river side because it looked like the place the original film chose. Although our actor is a girl and acted a man, but she still did really well in the film, and our film is psychological so we don’t really need make up and special costume, the actor just wear as normal. The only regret was the weather was really fine and couldn’t show hundred percent of awful sense.
We did teamwork really well, but some of our mate was a bit shy, if she could be talkable I think she maybe feeling better. I didn’t do a lot of shooting of the film, but I edited most of them and I found the location and drawn the planning picture. I think we need to add background music and some special effects in the film. In our final coursework film, we will add more background music and add some special effects into the film, and also use more shot types. We need more chat in the team as well to make sure everyone has their work to do.

Focus practice

`
That's the practice of focusing a necklace before the re-make. It's because we want to make sure we know how to focus it from non-focus to focus. As a consequence, we did it very well in our re-make film.

AS Coursework:Video Skills&remaking

during this practical assessment,we choose about 40 seconds from the opening of The Pendant(psychological 2)from 0:45 to 1:26.
we filmed our sequence in the University of Nottingham in a sunny afternoon. so the whole film appears to be too bright to create a frightening atmosphere. next time, we are going to use the exposer to make it dimmer.
we saved the previous one in our mobil phone ,so that we can make sure that every shoot is as similar as possible to it.
in our clip, there wasn't any shoot that the camera was in the same position, so we needn't to keep checking  .
we managed lots of different shot type, angle and movement such as: mid-shot combined with high angle to show the character is frightened and we can see the look on her face clearly.

Thursday 13 October 2011

Shoot Excersice

In our film clip,we have done many different shots such as close up for the face of the characters, extreme close up for the shoes, long shots for the location and both mid shots and mid close up for two characters.  Those shots we have learnt from class,we try to use them all. However, there still got some problems. Such as we jump a lots, therefore when we do our editing we can found out that the film is not smooth enough. This is the biggest problem that we always make. As we making this mistake a lot, we should do our planing much more detail. And also think more what the shots will be when we are filming. Hope to solve this problem in our next clip.

Thursday 6 October 2011

In this exercise,we have achieved continuity editing. It is much better compare the exercise we did last time. We do focus on people this time and the light balance was correct. Therefore It looks much better, also after editing the film goes smooth, doesn't jump with no sense.
However,we didn't frame it the shots very properly. We got a problem in shot number 2 and 3 in the location of corridor 2. It's because we didn't do master shot as we can only see the character 1 all the time and not both of them.So what we can improve was we should make sure we write properly in the planned sheet for using what shot type to remain ourself. Finally, work more to editing shots, make it more continuity.

Thursday 29 September 2011

First film exercise

This is our first film exercise, unfortunately its not going very well.We haven't framed it properly because we use different people in the film which is not good cause it can't be match the film. Also, our film is not focus very well which is not very clear. We have to make sure next time when we film it again we do focus. Moreover,we shouldn't wear the different clothes. We will improve it next time.
