Question4

Question4:Who would be the audience for your media product?
Target audience are the people to whom you cater a particular product or service. It's very important to know who is the target audience for my film. It's because as i identify who is my target audience I can also better identify what medias to advertise through and how to create my advertisement. If you don't know who to market to, you won't know how to market to them either. For example,i already set aged 15-21 is my target audience, then i can start to do research how to attract this age group of people. As i do more research i could know better about them and product what they want to watch. Also to create the advertisement,if this group of people are always on social networking,I can create a facebook page of my film and my production company. But if I didn't set a target audience, then i have no idea where start and there have large range that i have to research.Besides the age group, target audience can also look at gender, race, job and income.

And the target audience of my horror film will be the teenage group which is around 15-21 years old ,people in this age group would be very attempt to watch horror films especially the age of 15-17 because they are under the legal age of 18,some of the horror film they are not allow to watch. Thus,my horror film will attract them to watch as my horror film are not very bloody and scary which is suitable for age 15-17.As many of my competitors' target audience will be age 18 or above,my horror film will be more likely to target age 15-17 which will have a large amount of people and less competitor.

Also,in gender, males are going to my target audience.According to the research I have done, most of the people watching horror films are usually males. It's because males will have more interest to watch horror film and females often watch romantic films. But at the same time,my media product will also target females, because my story are base on a couple in the house. So,it's very reality to the females whose in a relationship.

Finally, there have no specific race will be the target audience.Everyone in different place can watch the horror film. But most of them would be the non-us group. It's because in my research,non-us people watch much more horror film than us people. Moreover,Chinese will be one of our big target audience,as my horror film is produce by Chinese people and the actors as well.As a consequence,Chinese people may interest to watch. But The film are English,so it can be both Chinese and non-us.

There is a example of my research of target audience with the horror film-The Ring:

Example of film: The Evil of Frankenstein
The Evil of Frankenstein is a 1964 British horror film made by Hammer Studio.
Direct by Freddie Francis, the film stars Peter Cushing and New Zealand wrestler Kiwi Kingston.
The film's version of the Monster is noted for resembling Universal Pictures' famous Frankenstein series of the 1930s and 1940s, including the flat-headed look of Jack Pierce's monster make-up originally designed for Boris Karloff as well as the distinctive laboratory sets. Earlier Hammer Frankenstein movies had studiously avoided such similarities for copyright reasons but a new movie distribution deal with Universal helped provide some latitude

This is the research of the two independent production companies which is Hammer and Fantastic Films and one major media institution which is Twisted Pictures.

  • I designed two posters for my horror film which shows below::

And the last two posters is my inspiration. One of them is just focus on the ghost and the other one is focus both the ghost and the victim. And i specially like the ORPHAN as the poster can make audience can focus on the girl make up and costume. Also the words CAN YOU KEEP A SECRET was very good inspiration because as my horror film named You Never Know, and when i add this the audience would love to watch it and found out the secret i mention. And the other poster that have two girls was inspirate me that is good to put the ghost and the victim together.Besides,it is very simple and clean for a poster.
  • Advertisement campaign

To considered of the advertisement, the posters will appear in every cinema and DVDs shop.It can attract more people to come especially people who like movies. Moreover, the poster and the trailer will be appear on the internet, which is cheaper and can attract more young people to watch. As the target audience of the film was 15,internet is one of the best way to communicate with this age.The trailer will be upload on youtube.Besides,i will make a Facebook page and on twitter to let people find out more about us,posters and trailer will be upload as well.
  • Release diary
It would be release in the cinema for a short period,it is because my production company is very small and there have no enough capital to do it for a long period time. Also,it is a short film not going to release long. But it is going to release on the DVD because the cost would be cheaper and everyone can buy the DVD.
  • Production company logo
The original idea of our production logo was the eyes will change from black to red.But because our skill was not good enough,it's not possible to make it moving picture. Therefore,we can only use a still image. As a consequence,to compare with the competitor logo our logo may not a bit simple for them.

Here is some example of production logos:

As a result i got, most of the production company logo are moving picture and it is really impressive. However although mine isn't good enough compare with them, but in my opinion our production logo was quite good and creative. It's very simple but can bring a information out to tell the audience my production company are making horror film.

This is my production logo:

Costume fail

As it is all Chinese in my group, therefore we really want to put some Chinese element inside the horror film.We consider to use Cheongsam which is a traditional Chinese dress, and the red Cheongsam are often appear in the Chinese horror film with a red paper umbrella.

Here are some examples:

But unlucky,we can't find any Cheongsam in my living area in UK.And we are not able to deliver it from China as we don't know the size and if the design was suitable for us.Finally,we design just use a long write dress to be our final costume.

Question 2

Question 2:How does your media product represent particular social groups?

  1. Analyse the Representation in existing films form your Sub-genre.

The sub-genre of both horror films-The Ring and The Grudge 2 was the ghost which is the same of mine.Im going to analysis the age, gender and race to see how  my media product represent particular social groups.

Firstly, most of the victim would more likely to be female either in my own media project or in my research like the horror films above. As far as why women always victims, it has to do with audience perception of women. they are usually soft and meek. These qualities in a women attract the audience's sympathy. They are very concerned about their well-being and we do not want anything bad happening to them. So our attention is at peak when a women is victimized; thus we become more involved in the plot. Moreover to consider the age of the victim, there have no specify age to being a victim. In the horror film-The Ring, the victims are from young to old.But usually not above 50 due to they are not active and may not attract the audience. However, the child would always appear on the horror film. It's because child are same as female they are very soft and week, the audience will get attract to it such as the little boy in The Ring. And the average age of the victim will be age 17-30 such as The Grudge, there have some student being the victim. Finally, the race of the victim would mainly depend on which country was making the horror film. For example,in European the race would always UK or USA.And in Asia the race would likely to be Japanese or Chinese.

As female, people age17-30 are typically portrayed as the damsel in distress, this follow the stereotypes. The stereotypes can be define by a fixed, commonly held notion or image of a person or group, based on an oversimplification of some observed or imagined trait of behavior or appearance.
How has your planning evidenced your understanding of social groups representation?
Choice of actor :

In my media project i choice female to be the ghost of my film,It's because according to my research audience are most likely to see the female ghost. Also,It related to the conventions as most of the ghost in the horror film are female with very long hair, white face and dress.

And the victim will be female as we already know female are best to be victim as they are soft and week.

Many of the horror film have got a male which acting the boyfriend or husband of the female. And therefore I choice a boy as well in my media project. And he is also one of the victim to make my short media project full of content.

Story:
My story are base on the a couple in the house. At the beginning,Elaine(Girlfriend) was planning to have shower, when she walked in the bathroom she found out her boyfriend(Leo) didn't turn the tap off. Elaine was very angry because this is not the first time and went out to argue with Leo. But Leo said he didn't use it,Elaine though he's lying. And when Elaine walked into the bathroom again she saw the tap was open again. Scared by the tap,she looked around the bathroom. Meanwhile, the ghost appear and killed Elaine by drown . After Elaine was being killed, the ghost start to attack Leo. The ghost came out under the bed and lay on it . Leo though the ghost was her girlfriend, therefore he try to stroke her hand and apologize. But then, the ghost disappear and Leo found out her girlfriend was being killed in the bathroom. When he looked above,he saw the ghost. Finally,he shout which mean he is going to be the next one.
Therefore the film decide to be-YOU NEVER KNOW

The story are very common in my sub-genre,thus i made the ghost appear more especially my film only got two minutes. In order to make the content more full, the ghost have to appear all the time as it was the key point.

This is my pervious storyboard/script,as i change the story before and i didn't draw a storyboard for my new story, therefore i posted my old storyboard and script. It is the same sub-genre thus it's good to have another example.

Target audience research sheets:
This is my target audience research,as the result of my research most audience are males under 18.Therefore to cater the social group, age 15 will be my target audience. Moreover, most of the audiences are male because they are more daring to watch and found horror film exciting. Finally, the race of my horror film would be non-us.It's because people non-us watch more horror film than people in us.
  1. Construction and Feedback

Both of the pictures above are similar represent social group.Which is showing the relationship between  male and female. But in my media project my age of the characters are younger which is 18-20,which is just in a relationship compare to the existing film-What lies beneath, they are married couple with age around 30-40.

And to talk about how I have created my own representation.I chose a younger couple is because my target audience was around 15-20,and if my characters are the same social group with them they will get more attention and interest to my horror movie. Also, they are a couple many of the couple in this age group may get interest to know more about it.Finally because im a Chinese therefore I would like to invite Chinese actor. Then the social group will become more international.

Feedback
After i discuss with my audience, they agree and think i represented the issue of age, gender and race. It's because they are in the same social group, therefore they have resonance. The picture below was the key word of the representation of social group:

Feedback from my audience::

This is the feedback form from my audience, according to this. Most of them think my represents  issues of age/gender and can is very natural and the represents of age would be positive.

My Top10 scariest movies

This is the best scariest movies that i found out on youtube, which inspires me a lot.Actually many small and easy scene can bring lots of fear. For example,THE RING.It's very simple have a long hair women stand here. But with the make up,it makes a big different!!!!Therefore a make up was very important in horror film

Some problem

There have some problem in our horror film are not the same as what we design as there have some physical and human problems::::

1.)The Characters make up
Consider to make it more scary,we want to use a contact lens like the picture above. But because the actress was not feeling good with it therefore we have to remove this make up.

2.)The Steam
We want the bathroom to be full of steam which look more scary and mystery.Audience can't really see what happen inside then they will start to guess. But we tried to open up the hottest water but the effect was not obvious which cause by the bathroom was too big and the even the windows and door were close but there still some steam going out.

3.)The ghost appear

From the original idea we want the ghost appear on the bed which like the video clip below(2:43-3:00):

But as the bed was not big enough and it's not easy to do it with good effect therefore we decide to change to the ghost appear under the bed like which shows below:

4)A missing scene

The original of my story i would like the water coming out from the bathroom and Leo discover something happen inside the bathroom. But because of the carpet absorbs most of the water,so we decide to cancel this scene.

Fail make up

This is the first make up and actress we considered, but the effect are not scary enough.
Thus,we change the actress and the make up.And the final make up was very scary which shows below.
